UWS 45B — Environmental Literature: Ecocriticism and Writing

[ uws ]

This course introduces students to the power of writing as a means of communication and a process of thinking and understanding. As students complete a series of writing assignments, they will engage in a process of reading, drafting, reviewing and revising, working in peer groups and individually with their instructors.
In this section of UWS, we will be using the lens of nature, ecology and environmental issues to further develop writing and research skills, and to understand the links between writing, literature and the environment. An eco-critical approach to a literature and writing course allows students to be more critically evaluative of their environments and to move beyond social constructions to approach their perceptions of place and nature. This approach also allows students to further identify where social concerns reflect a growing consciousness of environmental threats. Focusing on environmental issues and nature writing the content in this course will raise awareness of “going green” and sustainability.
