HIST 175a, Topics in Latin American History: Dirty Wars, Peace Processes, and the Politics of History. This seminar explores the relationships between different Cold War-era Latin American internal armed conflicts and the thorny peace processes bringing them to a formal close. We will focus on Guatemala, El Salvador, Argentina, and Chile, using critical and comparative approaches in order to understand the deep histories of the dirty wars; how these histories conditioned these nations’ diverse approaches to political transition; and how competing claims to history and memory are articulated and contested up until the present day by social movements, survivors, militaries, political parties, and governments.
HIST 175a, Topics in Latin American History: Dirty Wars, Peace Processes, and the Politics of History, counts as LALS 100a in spring 2011.
