UWS 29B — Probing the Uncanny: Analyzing and Writing about Otherness

[ uws ]

This course introduces students to the power of writing as a means of communication and a process of thinking and understanding. The topic of this course is Probing the Uncanny: Analyzing and Writing about Otherness. As students complete a series of writing assignments, they will engage in a process of reading, drafting, reviewing and revising, working in peer groups and individually with their instructors.
This course aims at making “otherness” legible through a dialectical exchange between literature and the social sciences. By bringing together disciplines such as literary analysis, psychology, anthropology, and history, students will be able to conceptually triangulate “otherness”. Students will also draw from the learned techniques of literary writers introduced in the class, such as Poe, Darwin, Freud, Kristeva, Glover, Montaigne, Wells, etc., to develop their own singular analytical, literary voice. This multidisciplinary analytical and writing course will train you to become a better reader of literature and theory, which in turn will make you a better critical and analytical thinker and writer.
