Topic for spring 2018: Drawing into Painting. An introduction to the materials and methods of drawing with wet media, intended for both studio majors and non-majors. This course will explore wet media as a bridge between drawing and painting, and will introduce students to traditional and contemporary approaches to using ink, watercolor, collage, mixed media, and color. Using drawing concepts as a basis for seeing and sharpening perception, students will learn a wide variety of approaches and techniques for creating convincing and accurate drawings from observation. Subject matter will include still-life, landscape, portraiture, and the figure.

Intermediate Drawing II

Topic for spring 2018: Drawing into Books. Offers a hands-on exploration of the book format and artist book editions, using drawings as the source material. Students will improve on their drawing skills while learning about the form and structure of the book by doing their own books in class. Using different drawing methods, students will approach ideas of narrative, duration, and sequencing. This class includes demonstrations of various techniques of bookmaking, adhesive and non-adhesive bindings, sewn binding, experimental object-book formats and the preparation/layout of a book edition.

Students will be introduced to various ceramic techniques: hand-building (slab and coil construction), wheel-working, press molds and extrusions. Projects will reinforce these ceramic techniques while exploring ideas of alternate glazes, incorporation of non-ceramic materials and site-specific installation.
