Latin American Politics I
[ nw ss ] Fall 2015 focus: Democracy and Decay Introduces students to central puzzles of Latin American politics in three Latin American countries. What do we mean by democracy, and does it mean the same thing to Latin Americans as it does in the U.S. or in other developed countries? Does economic development foster authoritarianism or democracy? What explains the wave of democratization and more open market-based economic systems beginning in the 1980s? How well does democracy function now that it is fairly securely in place in most Latin American countries? How should we explain economic development and stagnation in the region? This course introduces students to central puzzles of Latin American politics in three Latin American countries. Does economic development foster authoritarianism or democracy? How well does democracy function now that it is fairly securely in place in most Latin American countries? How should we explain economic development and stagnation in the region? |
