Topic for spring 2014: El mundo dramático y social en los siglos XVIII y XIX. We will consider the dramatic and social worlds of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Spain as presented in important and well-known plays. We will try to arrive at a tentative understanding of the shifting notions of drama and dramatic form as well as of social and gender roles. Instead of reading these works as mirrors of society, we will attempt to tease out various competing interests and concerns even as we pay attention to the way that authors discuss issues with one other across the decades.
